League Two round-up: Port Vale get shot at top three – South Wales Argus

PORT Vale will be hunting a win to move back into the automatic promotion spots when they host Newport County AFC on Monday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

The sides chasing promotion from League Two will finish the regular season on Saturday, seven days after last day in the third tier.

County already knew that they would be going up against Crewe and Doncaster in 2022/23 and the other two dropping down will be Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon.

Exeter and Forest Green are going up from the fourth tier and it is the Grecians that are in pole position for the title after fighting back for a point against Northampton, who are now vulnerable to Port Vale.

The Cobblers needed to win both remaining games to guarantee promotion but Sam Nombe cancelled out Mitch Pinnock’s superb opener.

Forest Green lost 3-1 to Harrogate in Gloucestershire to lose top spot for the first time since September.

Jack Muldoon put Harrogate ahead from the spot in the first half before Jamille Matt levelled with his 19th goal of the season, also from the penalty spot.

Sunderland loanee Jack Diamond regained the lead for Harrogate a minute after the restart and substitute Lloyd Curry clinched the win on 72 minutes.

Hat-trick hero Aaron Collins snatched a 95th minute winner as promotion-chasing Bristol Rovers twice overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Rochdale 4-3.

Dale took a two-goal lead into the break after Luke Charman netted in the ninth minute and added a second eight minutes later.

Sam Finley brought Rovers back into the game with a composed finish in the 53rd minute but Dale restored their two-goal lead on the hour mark when Matt Done teed up Corey O’Keeffe.

Rovers hit back when Antony Evans slid an intelligent delivery across the face of goal for Collins to convert. They then drew level in the 89th minute through Collins he clinched all three points in the 95th minute when turning home Elliott Anderson’s header.

Rovers’ Paul Coutts was sent off in the last few seconds during a melee in his own penalty area.

Swindon climbed into the play-off positions after goals from Josh Davison and Louie Reed earned them a 2-1 win over Barrow.

Matt Platt restored parity late on with a header before Reed rounded off a brilliant individual performance to earn all three points with a close-range goal in the 85th minute.

Goals from Theo Archibald and Aaron Drinan gave Leyton Orient their third win in the last four away games with a 2-0 victory at Crawley Town, who have now lost three games in a row following the suspension of head coach John Yems.

Bradford City ended play-off contenders Sutton’s 19-game unbeaten home run with an emphatic 4-1 win.

Charles Vernam scored twice for Mark Hughes’ side, taking his tally to eight for the season, before Yann Songo’o and Andy Cook wrapped it up late on.

Alistair Smith scored Sutton’s goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Relegated Scunthorpe drew 1-1 at home to Hartlepool United and Tranmere heaped more misery on Oldham with a comfortable 2-0 win.

Carlisle won their last home game of the season as they beat Stevenage 2-1 at Brunton Park thanks to goals from Joe Riley and Lewis Alessandra.

Freddie Sears scored twice as Colchester United played out a 2-2 draw with Walsall, whose goals came from Brendan Kiernan and George Miller.

India seizes £577m from Chinese company Xiaomi – South Wales Argus

Indian authorities have seized £577 million from Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi, accusing it of breaking the country’s foreign exchange laws by making illegal remittances abroad.

The Enforcement Directorate, India’s financial investigation agency, tweeted that it had seized the amount from Xiaomi’s local unit. The move comes after an investigation was launched in February over concerns of illegal remittances.

The agency said the smartphone maker had transferred 725 million dollars (£577 million) to “three foreign-based entities” under the guise of royalty payments, according to a statement quoted by the Press Trust of India.

Earlier this month, the agency had also questioned Xiaomi’s global vice president, Manu Kumar Jain, at the company’s regional office in the southern city of Bengaluru.

The smartphone company said a statement it complied with local laws and added that its “royalty payments and statements” were “legit and truthful”.

“These royalty payments that Xiaomi India made were for in-licensed technologies and IPs used in our Indian version products. It is a legitimate commercial arrangement for Xiaomi India to make such royalty payments,” the statement said.

Two years ago, India banned over 100 Chinese-owned apps as tensions between the countries soared over border clashes.

In June 2020, Indian and Chinese troops fought with clubs, stones and fists along a disputed section of their border, leaving 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead.

Since February last year, both countries have withdrawn troops from some sites, but they still maintain a presence.

In March, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi travelled to New Delhi to discuss expediting the disengagement of troops and the possibility of de-escalating the situation.

Suspected tornado causes severe damage as it rips through Kansas – South Wales Argus

A suspected tornado that ripped through parts of Kansas has damaged multiple buildings, injured several people and left more than 6,500 people without power.

Officials said the suspected twister moved though parts of south-east Wichita and Andover on Friday evening.

Andover fire chief Chad Russell said during a news conference on Saturday that 50 to 100 buildings were damaged in Sedgwick County, though it was not immediately known how many buildings were damaged in Andover.

Mr Russell said in some neighbourhoods homes “were completely blown away”.

Officials said only a few injuries had been reported.

In Sedgwick County, three people were injured, including one woman who suffered serious injuries.

Mr Russell said no injuries had been reported in Butler County, but a secondary assessment would be conducted later.

He said that while it was not immediately known how many buildings had been damaged, more than 900 structures were in the suspected tornado’s path.

He said some neighbourhoods were “damaged enough that houses were completely blown down” and cited areas that suffered “very bad damage”.

City Hall also sustained damage, which hampered “some of our efforts”, Mr Russell said.

Governor Laura Kelly declared a State of Disaster Emergency for the hardest hit areas. The declaration makes state resources available to help local jurisdictions with response and recovery efforts.

In addition to the tornadoes, large hail was reported in several towns. Hail the size of softballs was spotted near Holbrook, Nebraska, and Enterprise, Kansas, according to the National Weather Service and storm spotters.

Venus and Jupiter align in treat for skygazers – South Wales Guardian

Venus and Jupiter align in treat for skygazers  South Wales Guardian

Full view here

Skygazers are getting the chance to see two bright planets appearing close together despite being millions of kilometres apart.

The cosmic treat shows Venus and Jupiter lined up as they rise above the horizon, and just before the Sun follows after them.

The  peak time to see this planetary conjunction, which happens once every few years, was between around 5am and 6am on Saturday but it can still be spotted on Sunday and in the coming days as the planets slowly move apart.

Despite appearing from Earth to be lined up, the planets will not actually be in that position in space.

Dr Robert Massey, deputy executive director of the Royal Astronomical Society, said: “In this particular case you have Venus and Jupiter (appearing) close together and because they are both bright, that’s a nice sight.”

He said: “It is fun. Is it scientifically important – no not really – but it does provide a nice spectacle.

“I think that the nice thing you can have is that with a single telescope eyepiece you can see the two planets together which is an unusual view.”

He added: “Although they appear close together, Venus is about 150 million kilometres away at the moment and Jupiter is 740 million kilometres away.”

A clear eastern horizon  is needed to see the event. Buildings, trees and hills will make it much harder to see as they will appear quite low in the sky.

Viewers in the UK will have a harder time of trying to see it than people further south in southern Europe, Africa, or Australia, as the planets will appear to be a lot higher in the sky before sunrise.

Dr Massey said that in the UK “it will be best to stop looking at sunrise so you are not staring at the sun which is bad for your eyes”.

Then once the sun rises, it will be “virtually impossible” to see the event.

He has also said: “You can try to spot the planets with binoculars (use an online star chart to work out where to look) but you must only do that before sunrise as looking at the Sun with binoculars or a telescope can cause serious damage to your eyes – as can looking at the Sun with your eyes alone.”

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said: “Venus and Jupiter will not be visible in the sky until around sunrise on Sunday morning, so by then most of England and Wales will be cloudy.

“There is a small chance the southeast could still have some cloud breaks, but the better chance will be across northern Scotland.”

Skybound Therapies’ Risca Solomon in Welsh Business Heroes spotlight | South Wales Guardian – South Wales Guardian

Skybound Therapies’ Risca Solomon in Welsh Business Heroes spotlight | South Wales Guardian  South Wales Guardian

Skybound Therapies behaviour analyst Risca Solomon will be the subject of this month’s Welsh Business Heroes event.

With a head office and therapy centre in Haverfordwest, Skybound works with individuals with autism and developmental disabilities across Wales and the rest of the UK.

Skybound, started by Ms Solomon in 2012, employs 30 staff including behaviour, occupational, speech and language therapists.

They share a passion to improve the lives of individuals and their families, working with people of all ages and focusing on improving quality of life through improving skills, knowledge and expertise.

Skybound have contracts with local authorities throughout Wales and England, as well as working directly with families.

Heavy investment goes into the team’s training and the staff are at the forefront of the latest techniques.

Landsker’s Jeremy Bowen Rees will chat to Ms Solomon about her background and the inspiration for starting the business, and how she has scaled it in a sector full of small practitioners.

Other topics will include recruiting and managing a remote team and the challenges and rewards that running a growing successful business from a rural location can bring.

“My parents began doing respite and foster care for children with developmental disabilities when I was 11 years old,” said Ms Solomon.

“We looked after many children, some in wheelchairs, some with behavioural difficulties, feeding difficulties and more. I remember all of these children fondly.

“During secondary school, I completed work experience at the local special school. These experiences led me to want to become a learning disability nurse, but as I waited to start my university course, I began working in an adult’s challenging behaviour unit and then as an ABA therapist.

“Also, Dan, a four-year-old with autism and challenging behaviour needed a respite family.

“We began providing respite and I began work as an ABA therapist. Dan then stopped going home due to a complex situation within his biological family.

“Dan needed a long-term home and ABA was opening my eyes to how you could actually teach functional skills to individuals with developmental disabilities.

“That was it, I cancelled my university place and began a degree with the Open University.”

She added: “We also set about fighting to get Dan a full-time ABA home-based programme and eventually succeeded.

“Aged seven by the time we started, not toilet trained, no appropriate communication, severe challenging behaviour, disturbed sleep, no cooperation to do anything, every day was a struggle for all of us.

“But within months he began to use sign language, his challenging behaviours decreased, his appropriate behaviours increased, he was transforming before our eyes.

“The therapy was fun, engaging and made him happier than we’d ever seen him!

“We tried using ABA to teach him speech, but only managed to teach him three sounds, so my search began for prompting techniques that may work with him.

“We travelled to London, to Orlando to anywhere we needed to. At the age of 12, I had found the right combination and he began to develop speech.

“I showed everyone the progress on YouTube and then the requests began coming in for support from other families.”

“I was only just getting ready to sit my board-certified assistant behaviour analyst exam but people were asking for me to consult to their programmes.

“Skybound evolved from here!”

She continued: “I am so incredibly grateful for the amazing people who have supported me along the way and who make up our wonderful team of dedicated professionals.

“But more than anything, I am so thankful to the families, schools and local authorities who have trusted us to help them to do their best by the children.”

NatWest, Landsker Business Solutions and Newsquest have teamed up to deliver the series of webinars celebrating successful Welsh entrepreneurs.

AN ORCHESTRA of Ukrainian refugees will feature on the BBC Proms as part of the eight-week season of classical music concerts.

The newly-formed Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra will be led by Canadian-Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, and includes musicians who are now refugees and Ukrainian members of European orchestras.

As part of this, the Ukraine Ministry of Culture is granting a special exemption from fighting to male members of orchestras who are of military age.

Following an inaugural performance in Warsaw, Poland, the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra’s first stop will be in London for the Proms – which will be broadcast on the BBC.

They will perform on July 31 as part of the event.

This will be the first BBC Proms held at full capacity since 2019 (PA)

What else will also be on at the BBC Proms?

This year the Proms returns to its full eight-week season on July 15, with 84 concerts starring more than 3,000 musicians, the BBC announced.

It will see the return of international orchestras including Berliner Philharmoniker led by Kirill Petrenko, the Philadelphia Orchestra led by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, and the Australian World Orchestra led by Zubin Mehta.

Also featuring is a large-scale repertoire, not heard at the festival since 2019, from Verdi’s Requiem to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony performed by the Chineke! Orchestra and Voices under Kevin John Edusei.

Mastermind host and BBC News correspondent Clive Myrie will present the First Night Of The Proms on BBC Two, while Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo and Scottish DJ Edith Bowman also feature in the presenter line-up.

TV naturalist Chris Packham will present the debut of Earth Prom, exploring the work of the BBC’s natural history unit which broadcast Sir David Attenborough’s earliest adventures.

There will also be an immersive experience of music, dance, theatre, and audio soundscapes called The Prom At Printworks, hosted at the industrial events space in south London, featuring works by Philip Glass and Handel.

David Pickard, director of BBC Proms, said: “It is a momentous year for the world’s largest classical music festival.

“I’m delighted that large-scale orchestral and choral repertoire will once again be heard in the Royal Albert Hall, and that we can celebrate the return of international orchestras.

“In the BBC’s centenary year, we can be proud that the Proms has been a part of the organisation for 95 of those 100 years, playing a key role in the corporation’s mission to inform, educate and entertain.

“After two adapted seasons, we look forward to welcoming audiences back this summer for eight glorious weeks of music making.”

Every concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and available on BBC Sounds, and 22 Proms are broadcast on BBC television and BBC iPlayer, including the First Night and Last Night Of The Proms.

Winning every game is ‘impossible’ – Antonio Conte | South Wales Guardian – South Wales Guardian

Winning every game is ‘impossible’ – Antonio Conte | South Wales Guardian  South Wales Guardian

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte thinks it will be “impossible” for his side to win all five of their remaining games.

Striker Harry Kane said earlier this week that his side had to have a 100 per cent record between now and the end of the season if they were to pip Arsenal to Champions League qualification.

Spurs would be guaranteed a top-four finish if they did take 15 points, beating their north London rivals along the way, but Conte knows how tough that is going to be especially as they also have to visit Liverpool next weekend.

Antonio Conte gives instructions to his Tottenham team (Nigel French/PA)

“I think if you win five games, probably you get a place in Champions League,” he said, ahead of Sunday’s visit of Leicester.

“But in England it’s impossible to think that in every game, you are going to win. You won’t.

“We have to go step by step, and game by game. On Sunday we face Leicester and you know very well they have a really good squad. For sure it will be a difficult game.

“We have to go step by step and understand that this is a big opportunity for us and we have to face every game with great enthusiasm, great passion and with joy.

“Also to share this joy with our fans because we are fighting for something special. For this reason, this type of situation has to give us a lot of energy for the final games of the season.”

Spurs have come unstuck in their last two games against teams who have sat behind the ball and not allowed their front three space to attack, resulting in zero shots on target.

Matt Doherty’s injury has hampered Conte’s preferred formation (Nick Potts/PA)

Conte is determined to stick with his 3-4-3 formation, despite injuries to wing-backs Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon.

He said: “Now we have Emerson (Royal) and (Ryan) Sessegnon available. I think that during the game (Dejan) Kulusevski can play in that position.

“I think the best solution is not to change what we know, what we are doing for seven months.

“With this formation, we know the way to play, this formation gives us great satisfaction. But if something else happens – I hope not – from now until the end, I for sure am forced to change something and find another solution.”
