Sam Warburton launches the new programme at USW

A Welsh rugby legend has launched a new sport programme that will enhance student performance at the University of South Wales.

Sam Warburton, former captain of the Wales and British Lions rugby union teams announced the new high-performance programme, at an event last week.

USW Honorary Fellow, Sam, was joined by Dawn Bowden MS, Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip, who opened the event.

The focus of the new programme is to enhance the student experience by providing a high-performance environment for USW students whilst they continue to play football, rugby, or netball, at a high level.

It has been designed to offer elite athletes, or those aspiring to compete at national or international level, a host of support services.

It’s hoped the programme will help students to train and compete at the highest levels whilst studying.

Achieve

Each high-performance sport will have a dedicated team of coaches and support staff who will work closely with them to allow athletes to achieve the highest possible standards.

The university has appointed three sports performance managers to oversee the programme – Director of Rugby at Pontypridd RFC, Justin Burnell, Andy Whittington who worked on athlete development for nine years at Cardiff City Football Club and Wales International and Celtic Dragons Netball player, Philippa Yarranton.

Dr Ben Calvert, Vice-Chancellor of USW, said: “Whilst the focus of today is to launch our high-performance sport programme, we are equally committed to ensuring that all our students can participate in sport and physical activity at any level, whether this be to participate socially with friends or have ambitions to compete at the highest level.”

Dawn Bowden MS, Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, and Chief Whip, said: “The Welsh Government’s ambition is to create the optimum environment for an inclusive sport system and a successful sporting nation – and our universities, colleges and schools are important contributors and partners in delivering that ambition.

“I’m sure that current and future students will reap the benefits of this programme, I wish the team well and congratulate all involved on their vision and commitment to delivering this programme.”

New Premier League regulations to control who can buy football … – South Wales Guardian

New legislation for the Premier League is reportedly set to trigger a major shakeup to how football clubs are run.

The yet-to-released Football White Paper, which The Sun claims to have seen in advance, will enforce tougher regulations on who can own clubs.

The measure will make sure only “fit and proper custodians” can take over outfits, in a bid to prevent multi-millionaires who cannot prove they amassed their fortune legitimately from owning English football clubs.

According to The Sun, the new regulations will also stop “greedy clubs” from joining breakaway competitions like the European Super League — which triggered huge protests by fans in 2021.

The reforms will reportedly give fans more of a say in how clubs are run (Clive Brunskill/PA)

While all clubs in the top five flights of English football will need to gain a fresh licence to play under the proposals.

The reform will give fans more of a say in how clubs are run and stop bosses from radically changing kits and logos, the paper adds.

Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan reportedly wants the regulator in place for the 2024/25 season and will “formally unveil legislation imminently”.

Reports of the Football White Paper – which The Sun says Cabinet will soon be signing off on – comes after an independent Fan-Led Review of Football Governance by Tory MP Tracey Crouch in late 2022.

The White Paper will reportedly prevent multi-millionaires who cannot prove they amassed their fortune legitimately from owning English football clubs (Zac Goodwin/PA)

The latest review – an update on the Government-commissioned report into the game in November 2021 – included 10 key recommendations, each supported by more detailed strategy.

It proposed for a new independent regulator for English football to oversee financial regulation in the sport “to ensure financial sustainability of the professional game”.

Other parts of the strategy addressed corporate governance, diversity and new tests for club owners and directors.

The release of the White Paper has already seen several delays due to changing Conservative leadership – among other factors.

Who are the Premier League’s winners and losers after transfer … – South Wales Guardian

Who are the Premier League’s winners and losers after transfer …  South Wales Guardian

Premier League clubs invested a record £815million during the January transfer window to strengthen their squads for battles at both ends of the table.

Here, the PA news agency takes a look at some of the winners and losers when the deadline passed.

Winners

Chelsea

The Blues were the biggest spenders of the January window, as Todd Boehly’s consortium laid out in excess of some £300m.

A British-record £106.8m deal for Enzo Fernandez from Benfica was finally confirmed by the west London club on Wednesday morning to further bolster the options for head coach Graham Potter.

However, with the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, who arrived for £88.5m from Shakhtar Donetsk amid interest from rivals Arsenal, and Joao Felix to fit into the side along with the likes of winger Noni Madueke and centre-back Benoit Badiashile – not to mention the potential of youngsters Andrey Santos, Malo Gusto and David Datro Fofana – then Potter certainly has his work cut out to keep everyone onside and mould them all into a winning team.

Arsenal

💬 “Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and International experience. He has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here.”

The boss on Jorginho 💪 pic.twitter.com/8bsP2e2rT9

— Arsenal (@Arsenal) February 1, 2023

Arsenal may have missed out on Mudryk as well as Moises Caicedo, with Brighton standing firm to keep hold of their wantaway Ecuador midfielder, but it was nevertheless a very positive January window at the Emirates Stadium.

In a largely unexpected deadline day move, the Gunners switched attentions to land Italian defensive midfielder Jorginho from Chelsea, which supplemented the other arrivals of Leandro Trossard, who was allowed to leave by Brighton, and Poland centre-back Jakub Kiwior.

Whether or not sporting director Edu has given Mikel Arteta enough for his side to last the distance in the Premier League title race remains to be seen, but the couple of shrewd additions mean they certainly should give title rivals Manchester City a run for their money through to May.

Wolves

— Wolves (@Wolves) February 1, 2023

New Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui was determined to freshen up the squad during January to kick-start their survival battle.

Looking to get an edge on some of their relegation rivals, Craig Dawson from West Ham adds some experience to the backline while it is hoped forwards Pablo Sarabia and Matheus Cunha can provide a cutting edge in the final third.

Brazilian Joao Gomes also came on board ahead of the deadline to add some flare to the midfield as the influence of former Spain and Real Madrid boss Lopetegui on the side continues to show positive progress.

Losers

Everton

Getting started. pic.twitter.com/xkCxyY3QUM

— Everton (@Everton) January 30, 2023

With Everton sacking manager Frank Lampard and turning to Sean Dyche, it was perhaps unlikely to expect major transfer moves during January – well, incomings anyway, as Anthony Gordon was sold to Newcastle for £45m.

Nevertheless, despite the timing of the change in the dugout, beleaguered Toffees fans would have hoped for at least one new face to bring into the ranks for the relegation dogfight.

Dyche has been here before though and Everton will be counting on the former Burnley boss to make a swift impact with the players he has got and on a squad which was much in need of a lift well before the transfer window opened.

Liverpool

Dutch forward Cody Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven (Mike Egerton/PA)

Over at Anfield, it has hardly been a hive of transfer activity either.

Liverpool did get some business done early, with Dutch forward Cody Gakpo coming in from PSV Eindhoven when he had been expected to head to rivals Manchester United.

It was, though, not just in attack where Jurgen Klopp’s squad could have done with an extra impetus.

Central midfield was one area which some felt should have been strengthened, and England international Jude Bellingham was said to be the primary target.

Despite a lack of more fresh faces, fully expect Klopp to battle on, looking to both recapture the team’s form as well as silence the critics.

West Ham

Will the pressure continue to mount on West Ham manager David Moyes? (Mike Egerton/PA)

Like Everton, the Irons are embroiled in a fight for survival, sitting just a point clear of the relegation zone heading into the next round of Premier League fixtures.

A January move for veteran forward Danny Ings for £12m from Aston Villa looked a positive step, only for him to get injured when making his debut.

Hammers boss David Moyes has seen his plans derailed somewhat by such injury problems all season – but that will count for little if the team fail to move up the table and the pressure mounts for a change in the dugout.

Premier League clubs spend record £815m in January transfer … – South Wales Guardian

The gross spend for 2023’s window was 90 per cent higher than the previous record of £430m in 2018 and almost triple the previous January window (£295m).

The record for a full season had already been broken by a £1.92billion summer outlay, with that mark soon extended through £2bn for the first time and to an eventual total of £2.8bn – a new all-time high.

Calum Ross, assistant director in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, told the PA news agency: “Record transfer spend in January, surpassing the previous record of £430m in January 2018.

“(In terms of) a seasonal spend in 2022-23, Premier League clubs are now over £2.5billion which highlights the level of capability of spend that they’ve got in the market at the moment.”

Premier League clubs also set a record for net transfer expenditure during a January window with a net spend of £720m, eclipsing the previous record set in January 2022 (£180m).

Chelsea’s £300m-plus outlay alone would rank behind only 2018 among Premier League winter transfer windows (Stefan Rousseau/PA)

As has been the trend in recent seasons, the English top flight far outpaced the rest of Europe – even the other members of the so-called ‘big five’ leagues in Spain, Italy, France and Germany.

Ross added: “When you look at the January transfer window alone, Premier League clubs have spent three times more than the other ‘big five’ leagues combined.

“And then when you look at seasonal spend, again, when you combine those other big five leagues together, the Premier League is spending more than all of those combined, which is just incredible.

Liverpool welcomed the signing of Cody Gakpo (Barrington Coombs/PA)

“You have the spend of the Premier League on a net basis at £1.5bn over the course of the season and then when you look at the other big five leagues as a collective, they’re actually in a net receipts position – so they’re actually receiving more from the sale of players than what they’re spending on players, which is quite stark (compared) to what you see in the Premier League.

“The Premier League was the only league of the big five that actually increased its media rights in the latest cycle, all the others either declined or stayed flat.

“There are obviously other things that come into that as well, when you look at new ownership at certain clubs, and also on-pitch performance is a big factor – whether that’s pushing for European competition or league titles, and then at the other end, just maintaining a place in the Premier League, is obviously a key driver of what’s going on across the market.”

Chelsea, under their new ownership group headed by Todd Boehly, continued to lead the way by signing World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez for a British record £106.8m while forward Mykhailo Mudryk joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal reportedly worth up to £88.5m.

Enzo Fernandez’s move set a new British record (Nick Potts/PA)

The Blues’ £300m-plus outlay alone would rank behind only 2018 among Premier League winter transfer windows, and is more than the combined spend of all other clubs in the big five leagues this month.

Newcastle spent a reported £40m initial fee to bring forward Anthony Gordon from struggling Everton – who were the only club not to make a January signing – while Liverpool spent £38m on Netherlands international Cody Gakpo and Leeds broke their transfer record with a £35m move for Hoffenheim’s Georginio Rutter.

The previous record season saw £1.43bn spent in the summer of 2017 with the January window’s £430m making for a total of £1.86bn.

Anthony Gordon was presented to the Newcastle fans at their Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton (Owen Humphreys/PA)

This campaign has blown that out of the water and Ross sees no let-up in the near future.

“One of the good indicators is to look at the transfer spend as a percentage of revenue and on the net transfer spend, we’re looking at about a quarter of revenue being spent on transfers,” he said.

“That is a lot, it’s higher than it’s ever been, but I think – managed appropriately, with appropriate long-term business planning and financial control – I can see that continuing.”

The 19-year-old Republic of Ireland youth international becomes the second forward to head to Rodney Parade on deadline day, following Manchester United’s Charlie McNeill through the door.

Kavanagh, son of former Cardiff City great Graham, spend the second half of last season on loan at Harrogate Town.

The forward has been prolific at age-grade level for Middlesbrough and, like McNeill, will now aim to take that goal-scoring form into League Two.

“I’m delighted to get the move over the line, I’ve been wanting to get a loan this window and this managed to come around so I’m really happy,” said Kavanagh, who was born in Cardiff while his father was playing for the Bluebirds.

After scoring six goals in 13 games in the Under-18 Premier League, the striker signed professional terms at the Riverside in 2020.

His first professional season at Boro led to a successful season of 13 goals in 20 Under-18 Premier League matches as well as two in three in Premier League Two and three in three in the FA Youth Cup.

Last season, Kavanagh netted six times in as many games in Premier League 2 as well as five in four in the Under-18 Premier League, which earned him a January move to Harrogate Town where he scored once in 12 games.

His fine goalscoring carried on into this campaign with a further seven goals from 11 matches in PL2 while he scored once in four appearances for Republic of Ireland Under-17s.

The Premier League leaders have had a bid accepted by their London rivals and the Italy midfielder is set to undergo a medical and sign a one-and-a-half-year deal.

Arsenal are keen to bolster their midfield and have turned attention to the 31-year-old having been rebuffed by Brighton in their attempts to sign Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea, for their part, are willing to let the player go as they pursue their own interest in Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez.

The deal also allows the Blues to bring in a fee for a player who would have been out of contract at the end of the season.

Big-spending Chelsea could make Fernandez the most expensive player in British history having made a reported £120m approach for the Argentinian World Cup winner.

The fee would eclipse the £100m Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in August 2021.

Chelsea, who have already spent more than £450m since the end of last season, have also been linked with a late bid for Caicedo and it remains to be seen if Arsenal’s interest in him is over.

Elsewhere, Tottenham remain cautiously optimistic about finalising a transfer for Sporting Lisbon defender Pedro Porro ahead of the Tuesday night deadline.

Joao Cancelo is poised to join Bayern Munich on loan for the remainder of the season from Manchester City.

The German club would have a £61.5m option to buy the Portugal full-back in the summer.

Newcastle have followed up their signing of Anthony Gordon from Everton by securing Scotland Under-21 full-back Harrison Ashby from West Ham for a reported £3m.

Ashby, 21, has been signed with an eye on the future and manager Eddie Howe told nufc.co.uk: “Harrison is a very talented young player with a lot of potential so we are delighted to sign him and are looking forward to working with him in this exciting new chapter of his career.”

🗣️ “He’s one of the best right backs in the league, if not in Europe. Coming in to learn from him is going to be a big thing for me.”@harrisonashbyy 🤝 @trippier2 pic.twitter.com/4mUDcqgCW6

— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) January 31, 2023

Ashby, who has made seven senior appearances for the Hammers, added: “I can’t get the smile off my face and it’s a proud day for me and my family.”

Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey meanwhile is expected to leave the Magpies to join Nottingham Forest.

Bournemouth have agreed a fee with Dynamo Kiev for defender Ilya Zabarnyi and the 20-year-old is now due to undergo a medical.

Leeds have also signed a player for the future in 18-year-old centre-back Diogo Monteiro from Swiss Super League side Servette FC.

Championship side Norwich have signed 19-year-old Arsenal winger Marquinhos on loan until the end of the season.

This Ardal South West League match saw both sides desperate to get the three points, but for different reasons.

Pontyclun to reinforce their position at the top of the table while Cwm needed points to try and move away from the relegation dogfight that is beginning to form with six teams currently in the mix trying to avoid the bottom three.

It was Cwm who just about edged the first half, with Ryan Thomas coming close with two good efforts and Keiran Richards testing the defence while Ross Morgan and Charlie Davies were extremely effective in the middle of the park for Cwm.

A good run in the 25th minute from Calem Rees saw him clipped as he surged towards goal and he composed himself to fire the penalty home for 1-0.

Pontyclun new signing Connor Shields then made it 1-1 in the 35th minute and the final 10 minutes to half time saw both sides probing to no avail with Rhys Griffiths and Leon Croucher having excellent defensive matches.

In the second half Cwm saw themselves under pressure for a prolonged period and another new signing Jorge Crofts gave Pontyclun the lead in the 56th minute.

Cwm had to defend strongly and Cory Saunders and Ronan Templeton worked hard, and Cwm were also grateful to an excellent stop by keeper Kai Rees.

With it looking like Cwm could not get back into the game, they had a bit of luck when a good run by Kyle Ashford saw his cross come over and caught the Pontyclun keeper out as it floated into the far corner.

Cwm were in overdrive and within two minutes a perfectly weighted ball from sub Harrison Thomas saw Ryan Thomas arriving perfectly and calmly picking his spot for one of his trademark key goals and a 3-2 lead.

Cwm introduced Sion Williams and new signing Ethan Taylor for the final 10 minutes and the team held out for an excellent win as Pontyclun searched for an equaliser.

Paul Lewis and his management team will have been delighted and it provides Cwm with a strong platform to build upon.

This Friday, 3 Feburary, Cwmamman have another tough match in the Ardal South West League as they play third-placed Mumbles Rangers at 19.15pm at Grenig Park.

After a gap of six weeks from their last league fixture, Drefach welcomed Pontarddulais to the Gwendraeth.

Both teams were keen to get back into the routine and an exciting game was on display for the supporters.

It was a tussle at the start and both teams were trying to stamp their authority on the pitch.

The break came after 20 minutes from a well struck free kick from the visitors putting them ahead.

Drefach responded immediately and were awarded a penalty that was saved by the outstanding Bont keeper.

The equaliser then came from a set piece that saw Elliot Morgan sweetly strike low into the visitors’ net.

Attacks were still plenty from both teams and Iwan Bull, Owain Jones and Ryan Roberts all getting on the score sheet.

With goals a plenty it was Drefach who looked the fitter and pulled away with goals from Jayden Davies and a brace each for Morgan and Bull.

With the visitors running out of steam the game was settled with a penalty from The returning Siencyn Rhys after a long break off from injury.

Overall it was a good game of football with a lot of cobwebs blown away after such a long break.

Premier League transfer deadline looming – who needs who before … – South Wales Guardian

Premier League transfer deadline looming – who needs who before …  South Wales Guardian

With the clock ticking down on the January transfer window there is plenty of business that may yet be completed in the coming days.

Teams fighting for Premier League survival, battling it out at the top or trying to get into Europe could all be tempted into the market.

Here, club experts from the PA news agency look at the options available and the likelihood of any other business before the deadline passes.

Arsenal

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has been linked with a move to Arsenal (Kieran Cleeves/PA)

The table-topping Gunners may look to add a defensive midfielder to their ranks due to growing concerns over a knee injury suffered by Mohamed Elneny in training recently.

Bids have been lodged for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo but it will take a big push to land one of their top targets in time.

Having already signed Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior for combined initial fees of £38.5million, Mikel Arteta is unlikely to dip back into the market for anything other than a midfielder unless an interesting proposition arises. (Mark Mann-Bryans)

Aston Villa

Aston Villa could make a move for Hakim Ziyech after the Moroccan’s fine run of form since the World Cup has made him an appealing option for Unai Emery.

It is thought Chelsea are keen to sell after strengthening heavily in January but the winger’s six-figure wages could be problematic for any deal to be made in the remaining days.

Having sold attacking players in the window it could open the door for Villa to make a move for Luis Henrique from Real Betis, although he would command a huge fee. (Reuben Rosso-Powell)

Bournemouth

Cherries boss Gary O’Neil went on the record to say he expects further incomings following the arrival of Burkina Faso forward Dango Ouattara from French club Lorient.

Goalkeeper Darren Randolph and forward Antoine Semenyo have since arrived and Uruguay left-back Matias Vina is expected to join from Roma.

Bill Foley’s recent takeover has given Bournemouth greater clout in the transfer market and, with the club having slipped into the relegation zone for the first time this season, it could be a busy couple of days in Dorset, with additions arguably required in all areas. (Ed Elliot)

Brentford

Brentford have no need for a last-minute splurge but want cover at right-back.

Tottenham’s Djed Spence has been linked with a move to west London.

The Bees may want to cash in on goalkeeper David Raya who is on the radar of Manchester United and Chelsea. (Andy Sims)

Brighton

Brighton have been targeting Ukraine international Mykola Matviyenko (Mike Egerton/PA)

Albion are reportedly keen on recruiting Ukraine defender Mykola Matviyenko, who head coach Roberto De Zerbi managed at Shahktar Donetsk, and teenage Sweden midfielder Yasin Ayari from AIK.

Having already lost joint top scorer Leandro Trossard this month, the high-flying Seagulls hope to fend off interest in star midfielder Caicedo – given time away from the club after declaring his interest in pursuing a “magnificent opportunity” elsewhere – and Alexis Mac Allister for the time being.

Danny Welbeck’s return to fitness, the emergence of Evan Ferguson and the fine form of Kaoru Mitoma and Solly March have eased the club’s immediate need for attacking reinforcements. (Ed Elliot)

Chelsea

It’s no secret that Chelsea are still in need of a target striker to lend bite to their expensively assembled creative cavalry, while central midfield also remains a priority with Jorginho likely departing in the summer and N’Golo Kante no closer to a return.

Wantaway Brighton star Caicedo is the club’s top target approaching deadline day, despite Brighton having reportedly turned down a £55m bid and Arsenal also keen. PA understands the club have no intention of selling the Ecuadorian before Tuesday, despite his desire to leave, but Chelsea’s interest remains.

Beyond that, Lyon full-back Malo Gusto has arrived but will stay in Ligue 1 for the rest of the season and Everton’s Anthony Gordon looks set to choose Newcastle over Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea have been endlessly surprising during this window and anything could happen in the coming days. (Robert O’Connor)

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace could strengthen their midfield options with a move for Stuttgart’s Naouirou Ahamada.

The France youth international has stood out of late and could give Eagles boss Patrick Vieira another option in the engine room of his side.

Forward Jean-Philippe Mateta could depart Selhurst Park with Galatasaray reportedly interested. (Mark Mann-Bryans)

Everton

An absolute must for Everton is a goalscorer to provide some support to an out-of-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin who still appears to be struggling with his fitness.

The embarrassment of having Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma snatched from under their noses by Spurs last week leaves them, for the second successive year, shopping in the final days of the sales with not a lot of money to spend due to continuing Financial Fair Play restrictions.

If Gordon’s wish to leave is fulfilled then another attacking player may be required, while midfield could do with some energy injecting into it but with so little time left it is unlikely all bases will be covered. (Carl Markham)

Fulham

Arsenal full-back Cedric Soares could complete a switch to Fulham before the window closes (Zac Goodwin/PA)

Fulham have exceeded all expectations this season and will finish the January transfer window above both Liverpool and Chelsea, but manager Marco Silva wants to further strengthen his side.

Having been largely fortunate with injuries recently, Fulham have been linked with the likes of Arsenal’s Cedric Soares and Torino midfielder Sasa Lukic.

They are yet to make any additions in January but have offloaded Anthony Knockaert to Huddersfield, while Nathaniel Chalobah could also leave Craven Cottage on loan. (Sonia Twigg)

Leeds

Leeds have reportedly agreed personal terms with United States midfielder Weston McKennie, who could link up with countrymen Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson at Elland Road.

Another midfielder, Ligue 1 side Angers’ Morocco World Cup star Azzedine Ounahi, had earlier been targeted by the Whites, who have also been linked with Fiorentina’s £17m-rated Brazilian centre-half Igor Julio.

Leeds broke their club record transfer fee to sign striker Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim for a fee which could rise to £36m earlier in the transfer window and defender Max Wober arrived from Salzburg for an amount in the region of £10m. (Mark Walker)

Leicester

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers will be keen to add strength and quality to his squad before the window shuts following a poor first half of the season.

They are among a number of clubs interested in loaning full-back Spence from Spurs, while Leeds midfielder Jack Harrison has also been linked.

A move for Fiorentina striker Nico Gonzalez seems more and more unlikely as Leicester aim to operate within their means. (Mark Mann-Bryans)

Liverpool

Liverpool have looked like they needed reinforcements in midfield all season and even with everyone fit it is still an area which requires attention.

However, having already spent £38m on forward Cody Gakpo this month it is unlikely there will be any further moves in the current window unless the availability of a previously identified target unexpectedly materialises.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Wolves’ Matheus Nunes remain high priorities but those are deals to be attempted in the summer. (Carl Markham)

Manchester City

We’re delighted to have completed the signing of Máximo Perrone from Vélez Sarsfield. The midfielder will join us after the U-20 South American Championship.

Welcome, Máximo! 💙🇦🇷#ManCity

— Manchester City (@ManCity) January 23, 2023

Manchester City are not expected to dip into the transfer market, with manager Pep Guardiola having said he intends to press on with the squad he has.

The champions have done one deal this month with the £8m signing of midfielder Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield but he is considered a player for the future and is not likely to feature this season.

There has been speculation about possible departures, with Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan linked with other clubs, but no major outgoings are anticipated in this transfer window. (Andy Hampson)

Manchester United

Nobody came into January predicting the loan signings of Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst, but here we are.

The latter has already made an impact and helped fill the void created by Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit, although United still look light up top.

Further incomings are not anticipated before the deadline at a club that the Glazers are looking at selling, but it is possible that youngsters and peripheral players head out. (Simon Peach)

Newcastle

Gordon’s potential move from Everton would bolster the attacking options available to Eddie Howe.

The Magpies are pushing for Champions League qualification with a top-four finish but are light in midfield with Jonjo Shelvey once again out injured.

Chris Wood joined Nottingham Forest on loan for the remainder of the season and other fringe players could yet depart. (Damian Spellman)

Nottingham Forest

It seems impossible to think given they have already made 24 signings this season, including three in the January window, but Nottingham Forest remain in the market for more recruits.

They could target a centre-half to try and cure long-standing defensive issues while another attacker could be brought in if the right man becomes available.

There could also be exits, with plenty of those 24 arrivals not getting much game time in recent weeks. (Jonathan Veal)

Southampton

Luton’s James Bree is being targeted by Southampton, who are managed by former Hatters boss Nathan Jones (Rhianna Chadwick/PA)

Saints have been active in January after a busy summer, but one key thing has been missing from both transfer windows: the acquisition of a striker.

The Premier League’s bottom side have been let down by their lack of cutting edge this season and relegation looms unless they finally add a goalscorer.

James Bree joined from Luton well before the deadline but he is a defender, not a frontman. Did I mention that Saints need a striker? (Simon Peach)

Tottenham

Tottenham will hope to complete the signing of Sporting Lisbon full-back Pedro Porro before Tuesday’s deadline.

Spurs are long-term admirers of the Spanish defender and after several talks throughout the January transfer window, an agreement with the Portuguese club on the payment structure of a deal set to be worth £45m euros is close.

Porro’s arrival will mean Antonio Conte has four right wing-backs at the club and Spence is expected to leave on loan with several Premier League clubs interested in the 22-year-old. (George Sessions)

West Ham

West Ham will dip into the loan market for a centre-half after Craig Dawson’s departure and an injury to Kurt Zouma.

Michael Keane is a target but Everton will not want to strengthen a relegation rival.

A striker could also be on the cards after new signing Danny Ings was injured on his debut. (Andy Sims)

Wolves

Wolves are on the brink of signing midfielder Joao Gomes from Flamengo amid rumours of Nunes’ potential departure from Molineux in the near future.

Ki-Jana Hoever has gone on loan to Stoke after the centre-back’s spell at PSV Eindhoven was terminated prematurely – he made just five appearances in the Eredivisie.

Having scored just 12 goals in the Premier League, head coach Julen Lopetegui may look to improve creative numbers with a new right-back – West Brom’s Ethan Ingram and Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey are options. (Reuben Rosso-Powell)
